Air-tan – Melanoma Awareness Month

Piggybacking off my last post.. You know how I mentioned sunscreen is the most important thing to wear? Well, it totally is. I’m all about enjoying the summer weather, but safely! As it turns out, May is Melanoma Awareness Month. I wanted to share a few statistics and introduce my favorite local business alternative to tanning, Air-Tan!

The Facts

  • Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the U.S.
  • One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime
  • The most common places to develop skin cancer are the face, scalp, ears, neck, and hands.

  • Stay out of the sun from 10am – 4pm
  • Cover up! Hats, SUNSCREEN, anything to prevent burning
  • Avoid tanning beds

So… now what? I’m more than comfortable covering up my face in the sun trying to avoid wrinkles. I’m paying too much for my botox to go to waste!! But.. I look better with color rather than being confused for Casper the Ghost… Introducing…

Air-Tan is one of my favorite places in Indy! They are a I’ve been a client for over 10 years.  I can’t lie, I’ve totally cheated and used the booth sprays.. and let me just tell you… don’t do it. Once you go air-tan, you can’t go back! You are tan in all the right areas. Most importantly, the tan is natural looking.

The Salons

There are three different locations around Indy, which makes it super convenient. They are currently located in Fishers (off 116th st), Broad Ripple (2 doors down from the Vogue), and Downtown (MDG Salon). You won’t find any booths here. Every salon is staffed with a fabulous group of trained technicians. They will make you feel comfortable and confident about your air-tan experience.

But Won’t I Be Orange?

Absolutely NOT!! The solution that is used is made specially for air-tan. My favorite part of the air-tan process is the fact you get to pick your level. The levels range from 1-5, 1 being the absolute lightest. I typically get a 3 or a 4. If I get a 4, I can still get a 3 on my face! It’s so much easier to customize what you are looking for. Tanner legs for an upcoming hiking trip? No problem!

Is It Safe?

Yes. No UV damage with an air-tan. The old tanning beds are dangerous, this is not. The rooms are fully ventilated and a mask is offered if you want extra protection.  By choosing Air-Tan over a tanning bed or outdoor tanning, you are avoiding the risk of sunburn, skin damage, early aging, sunspots, wrinkles, leathery skin, and worst of all—skin cancer. I get to see an instant color difference rather than feel the dreaded sunburn coming on.

DHA was listed with the FDA for three decades and has been used in cosmetic preparations for almost 30 years. Since DHA is not absorbed into the body, there is no possibility of toxicity.  There is no UV risk or damage to the skin.

How Long Does It Take? Last?

A typical air-tan appointment takes about 15 minutes. 15 minutes from drab to fab? Yes please. I can’t tell you how fast I scheduled my tan when I put on my first dress of the season. I’m not trying to blind everyone with my piercing white legs..yikes… so, my apologies to everyone who saw me on that day! That’s another thing, appointments. Air-tan takes walk ins, but they are usually pretty busy. Making an appointment is definitely the way to go. You can download the MindBody app, or use their website here. The tan lasts 7-10 days. I find that it stays looking the best when I moisturize after every shower.

Is It Really Worth It?

100% Yes. Absolutely. If you have a big event to go to, why risk it?? Or if you’re coming in weekly, you want to look your best, and look natural. Embarrassing photo alert.. here’s me back in college when I gave into using the spray tan booths. WHY didn’t anyone tell me how awful I looked? Oh, and I was Britney Spears ala slave for you snake performance for Halloween:

ALL ORANGE. White hands. Awful!!! And yes those are fake tattoos.. don’t worry, Mom!

Surprise! We are both air-tanned! It looks so natural. I feel so much more confident when I have an air-tan. Oh, and no white hands either!

Each tan is $35, which is very affordable! There usually is a package special, a monthly special and sometimes they even do BOGOs which are buy 1 tan at $35, get the 2nd tan for $15! If you come about three times a month, the monthly membership ($88/month) actually saves you money. If you get tanned every week like me, exfoliation is a necessity so you don’t have left over tan on you. The exfoliate scrub that air-tan sells is the best one I’ve ever used.

I <3 Air-Tan

Can you guys tell I’m obsessed? But really.. there isn’t another place in town like it! Have you visited air-tan lately? I’d love to hear about your experience in the comments!
