I’ve known about Big Lug for a long time. They’re owned by the same restaurant group that owns Sahm’s. As for the area, I’m very familiar with it. Back in college, a friend of mine worked in the tiny offices located above the Snooty Fox, which is now Big Lug. Snooty Fox was featured on Restaurant Impossible, but alas, did not survive. Introducing, Big Lug..
Big Lug opened in October 2016 and has been moving full steam ahead ever since! The restaurant looks nothing like the former tenant. They are located just off the Monon trail in Nora, which makes for a very central location.
Big Lug Drinks
They brew their own beer. I’m the first to admit that I am not a beer snob, whatsoever. IPAs are not my thing. However, both of our servers were extremely well versed in all of the food and drink offerings. Katie, hooked me up with her favorite cocktail. It had basil in it and was extremely yummy. My apologies on missing the name.. the cocktail menu isn’t available online. Also – did I mention I’m a big fan of when breweries also offer cocktails? Floyd, our other fantastic server, introduced a few of their own in-house brewed beers. Did you know that the beer is brewed in all american made equipment? USA, baby. Their beers are rated on menu from “Not Zombie Dust to Zombie Dust”.. which is a cute nod to the famous Indiana 3 Floyd’s Beer, Zombie Dust. As far as this girl is concerned, I only need one Floyd, our server.
I was the most excited to get our apps ordered. I stole a peek at the menu prior to the dining experience and was drawn to the garlic cauliflower. HOLY. SHIT. Guys. Honestly.. if you go and only order one thing, this needs to be it. It was a huge hit at the table. I’ve tried to recreate buffalo wings using cauliflower and mine always turn out soggy. These are absolute perfection.
We also sampled the cheese curds, Nashville wings, hoss dip, and the poutine. Full disclosure, I’ve never tried poutine because I don’t eat meat. BEST NEWS EVER: Big Lug offers a vegetarian poutine! I loved it. Everything other than the Fritos is made in house.
We were all very impressed with their sandwich and salad selection. Tip: Go half soup half salad. I decided on the Pepe Po Boy – blackened shrimp, chipotle sauce, chopped romaine, tomato, and Mexican humus. I’ve never had a Po boy with humus – it really kicked the flavor up. The best part of my meal was the Willie Special. The Willie Special consists of mixed greens tossed in ranch, topped with Nashville chicken, black bean corn salsa, diced mozzarella, guacamole and Frito salt. Yes, the Nashville chicken is spicy. Matt ordered the hot sauce and was full on sweating at the table. Phew!
My stomach is growling as I write this review. Several of you, actually DMed me from my live story saying this is also your favorite. Needless to say, the side portions are very filling. They actually got rid of their dessert menu because people are full on their delicious food without needing dessert.
Overall, we had a blast at Big Lug. Thank you so much for having us for dinner! We will definitely be back in the spring to check out the back patio. I cannot wait to see what else this restaurant group has in store.. hint: big things coming! Cheers, my friends!
